Some photographers are interested in nude bodies; I am fascinated by musicians' hands. For me it all started in the early 1980's watching classical guitarist Liona Boyd perform. There is a real beauty in watching her hands dance over the guitar. Then I began to watch other musicians in addition to listening. They all have their own styles, some are more visually pleasing than others, but the end results are always beautiful notes.
It is this beauty and grace that I attempt to convey in this collection of photographs of musicians' hands. These photos are different from the statically posed studio photos and the hopelessly blurred rock concert photos that are usually seen. I shoot live in small venues with telephotos lenses and I use a high enough shutter speed to freeze much but not all motion. I will be watching through the viewfinder, listening to the notes, waiting for the right moment to capture.
